21. Thomas Franklin BASSFORD (Abraham2, William1). Born abt 1834-1836 in New York. [27], [147] age 16 (or 14?) in 1850 census, age 22 in 1856. Thomas Franklin died in Atlantic Ocean, on 2 Nov 1856. [49] Death Cause: Shipwreck. [49] aka: Franklin. [28], [27]

He became a well-known pianist and composer while still a young man, but suffered an untimely death before when the French ship Le Lyonnais that he and his young wife were traveling on was lost at sea. He had been accepted at the Paris Conservatory of Music thanks to the recommendation of the piano virtuoso Louis Morceau Gottschalk. [28], [49]

He wrote an opera called "The Phantom Ship," based on the story of The Flying Dutchman. The manuscript for the opera was lost [148]
