9. Jacob BASFORD (James2, Jacob1). Born on 6 Apr 1715 in Durham, NH. [100] parents deposed that he was 21 years old on 6 Apr 1736. Jacob died bet 30 Apr 1760 and 25 May 1761. [109], [110] signed deed, and probate records. Death Cause: wounds suffered during the invasion of Canada. [2] Occupation: Yeoman, Husbandman, Innholder. [111], [112], [113]

There is no record of his birth in the town records, but his parents deposed that "there being no record of their eldest son Jacob Basford's age, testifieth that to the best of their knowledge he was 21 years old the 6th of April 1736." [100] This deposition was made in order to give Dr. Edmund Toppan a good title to the Hampton farm that Jacob and James Basford had conveyed to the Dr. Toppan in 1730. It was necessary that Jacob Basford, the grandson, who had a remainder interest, should convey his right to Toppan when he came of age. [3] This he did on 16 Oct 1736, his parents, James and Mary Basford, swearing to his age on that same date. [114]

On 18 Aug 1735, Jacob Basford of Chester, yeoman, sold 20 acres of land to Deacon Ebenezer Dearborn of Chester. [124] On 10 Jan 1750, Jacob Basford of Chester, innholder, sold 100 acres of land in Chester to Samuel Gilman, Jr. for £500. [113] On 20 Mar 1750, he sold land to John Sanborn for £300. [125] He bought rights to some land in Halestown from Joseph Prescutt on 31 May 1750 for £5. [126] On 3 Nov 1750, he purchased 100 acres of land from Abel Morss for £400. [128] On 16 Feb 1756, he bought 20 acres of land in Chester from John Sandborn for £300. [129] On 7 Jun 1758, he bought 5 acres of land in Chester from Zephaniah French and Robert Ambrose for £100. He enlisted in Capt. Hagen's company in March 1760, together with his son Ebenezer. He died of wounds suffered during the invasion of Canada. [2]

Inventory of his estate was taken 12 Feb 1761. [10, p. 466] A bond was issued for his widow Abigail on 28 Jan 1761. Probate records indicate that one child was 3 years old at time of Jacob's death. Division of the estate was made 7 May 1770 to his widow Abigail, and to his children John (the eldest), Ebenezer, Abigail (deceased), Jacob and Mary. [110]

[166] On 29 Apr 1760, Joseph bought 1/2 of a meadow lot from William Church for 24 shillings. [167] On 31 Apr 1760, he sold a 6 acre meadow lot to his brother Jacob for £7.10. [109] On 27 Jun 1760, Joseph bought a 4 acre meadow lot from John Cogswell for £3. [168] On 22 Jul 1760, John Robie and John Underhill quit-claimed two parcels of land to Joseph Basford for £280. [169] On 10 Oct 1760, Joseph sold two half lots of land in Chester to Andrew Craige for £200. [170]

On 25 May 1761 Joseph quit-claimed land in Durham, NH to Joseph Davis of Durham, together with Abigail the wife of his deceased brother Jacob, and his sister Elizabeth Clough. The land "fell to our mother, Mary Basford, of Chester aforesaid, deceased, which would have fallen to her out of her father Joseph's estate." [102]

On 20 Sep 1762, Joseph Basford of Chester, yeoman, sold 120 acres of land in Chester to Caleb Johnson for £200. [171] On 23 Sep 1762, he sold a parcel of land to Ebenezer Mudget for £200. [172] Joseph bought 25 acres of land in Chester from Abner Philbrick on 19 Jul 1763 for £400. [173] On 20 Jul 1763, he sold rights to a lot in Halestown to Samuel Philbrick for £600. [174]

At a meeting on 22 Nov 1763, the proprietors of Chester agreed to sell two parcels of common lands to Joseph Basford of Chester, gentleman, for £780. [137] Joseph sold a 25 acre lot to John Sevey for £400. [175] That same day, he bought 30 acres of land from Jonathan Brown for £200, [176] and another 30 acres of land from John Sevey for £200. [177]

On 7 Jan 1765, Joseph Basford of Chester, gentleman, sold 60 acres of land in Chester to John Tolford, Jr. for £300. [178] On 13 May 1766, Joseph bought a parcel of land being auctioned off by the proprietors of New Chester for 44 shillings. [179] On 15 Jul 1766, he bought a 4 acre meadow lot from Jonathan and Nathaniel Hall for £3.6. [180] On 4 Jun 1767,
Joseph sold a 4 acre lot to John Wadel for £10. [181] On 20 Jan 1769, he sold a 20 acre lot of land "I now live on" to Joseph Chase for £135. Wife Ann gave her dower release. [182] On 9 Jan 1771, Joseph sold 50 acres of land to Wells Chase for £85. Ann Basford gave her dower release. [183]

An anecdote is told of him that while residing at the Long Meadows, someone told him that his mother had fallen into the well. He replied that he would "light his pipe and hasten!" [10, p. 466]
