Fifth Generation (Continued)

Family of Ebenezer BASFORD (25) & Mary RICHARDSON

[10, p. 466], [190], [103, Vol. 1, p. 132], [2]

44. Moses BASFORD (Ebenezer4, Jacob3, James2, Jacob1). Born on 29 Sep 1766 in Chester, NH. [103, Vol. 1, p. 132] Moses was baptized in Chester, NH, on 8 Oct 1766. [17], [190] Congregational Church. Moses died in Pittsford, NY, bet 31 Aug 1818 and 9 Dec 1818. [284] will dated and proved.

He was in the Revolutionary War in 1782. [2]

1810 federal census of Farmington, Kennebec Co., ME. [17]
Moses Basford
1 male 26-45

It is interesting that he is listed alone in the 1810 census. Perhaps he had gone to Farmington to establish a home and left his family in Mt. Vernon with some other family. It is also possible that his wife Sally had died and that he left the children with someone else.

He is on a list of residents of landowners for Farmington, ME who had not paid their taxes for 1815. [286] He is also on the same list for 1816. [287]

He also lived in Paris, ME. [190]

He was foreman when the Boston State House was built. [288]

He is probably the Moses Bassford who was an early settler of Pittsford, NY, leaving a will dated 31 Aug1818, proved 9 Dec 1818, mentioning brother Reuben Bassford of Monmouth, MA [sic]. The will makes no mention of a wife or children, so perhaps he was estranged from his family? [289], [284]

He first married Sarah (BASFORD), ? . Born ? in Newton, MA. [291] Sarah died ? .

The death record for David Basford gives the name of his parents as Moses and Sarah Basford. His age would put his birth before Moses' marriage to Sally Pond, so presumably Sarah is a different wife that Sally. [291]

[291]

They had one child:
116 i. David F. (~1787-1880)

He second married Sally POND, daughter of Simeon POND (21 Feb 1734/5-Apr 1825) & Esther WHITE (abt 1745-1825), on 25 Aug 1791 in New Gloucester, ME. [23] Born on 17 Jul 1770 in Newton, MA. [2] Sally died ? .

Perhaps she is the Abigail Basford who married Lewis Waterman on 15 Jun 1823, Jay, ME. [23]

[10, p. 466], [17], [190], [2]

46. Ebenezer BASFORD (Ebenezer4, Jacob3, James2, Jacob1). Born on 27 Jul 1770 in Chester, NH. [190], [2] Ebenezer died ? .

He married Joanna MERRILL, on 12 Sep 1797 in Mt. Vernon, ME. [2], [23] Born abt 1782 in New Hampshire. [293] age 68 in 1850 census. Joanna died ? .

Living with the family of her daughter Eliza in the 1850 federal census for Lowell, MA [293]

She may be the Joanna Basford, age 78, b. New Hampshire, listed in the 1860 census of Sacramento, 4th Ward, CA (apparently in a boarding house). [294]

[293], [2], [23]

They had the following children:

47. David BASFORD (Ebenezer4, Jacob3, James2, Jacob1). Born on 23 Nov 1772 in Chester, NH. [190] David was baptized in Chester, NH, on 13 Dec 1772. [17], [190] Congretational Church. David died in Mt. Vernon, ME, on 24 Apr 1821. [188] gravestone. Buried in Jacobs Cemetery, Mt. Vernon, ME. [188]

He is probably the David Baford listed in the 1800 federal census for Livermore, Cumberland Co., ME, p. 190 [263]
David Baford
1 male 16-25
1 male 26-44
1 female under 10
1 female 10-15
If this is the right person, then he was probably married previously to his marriage to Betsey Gilman in 1815.

He is probably the David Basford mentioned in the statement by Samuel Quimby of Mt Vernon, ME on 23 Oct 1807: David Basford... "a person distracted broke from my care and I am unable to restrain him." [295]

1820 federal census for Mt. Vernon, Kennebec Co., ME [269]

He married Betsey GILMAN, daughter of Samuel GILMAN (? -? ) & Elizabeth DUDLEY (? -? ), on 23 Mar 1815 in Monmouth, ME. [2], [297] or Mt. Vernon, ME. Born abt 1778-1780 in Monmouth, ME. She is probably the Betsy Basford who married Oliver O. Bradley on 14 Sep 1829, Mt. Vernon, ME. [23] However, she is listed with the surname Bassford in the 1850 census. [275] THere is an Oliver Bradley living in the same household, although he does not appear to be a spouse. Perhaps he is a step-son?

1850 federal census for Mt. Vernon, Kennebec Co., ME, p. 389. [275]
Betsey Bassford, female, age 70, b. ME
Betsey Allen, female, 33, b. ME

1 female 40-49 (Priscilla)

They might be the man and woman, age 60-70, living with their son Moses in the 1840 census. [274]

There is a Lydia Basford, age 44, b. Maine, listed in the 1860 census for E. Livermore, ME, with the family of Thomas Lathrop. [277] Could this be another daughter of John and Priscilla? A couple of their children married Lothrop spouses, although I don't see any connection to this Thomas Lathrop.

[190] gives death as 1854.

[10, p. 466], [17], [190], [263], [192], [188], [2], [23], [298]

He married Priscilla MARTIN, on 5 Oct 1797 in Mt. Vernon, ME. [23] Born abt Mar 1770. [188] age 80 years 9 months at death. Priscilla died in Livermore Falls, ME, on 20 Dec 1850. [188] gravestone. Buried in Richardson Graveyard, Livermore Falls, ME. [188], [298]

According to the History of Monmouth, he removed from Mt. Vernon, ME to Monmouth, ME in 1810. [300, p. 330]

Notes from Marjorie Spille give baptism as 17 Jan 1773 in one place, and 17 Jan 1775 in another. [17] I assume that 1775 must be correct since the other date would be too close to the births of his brothers David and John.

[190] gives birth and baptism as 1 Jun 1775.
