Fifth Generation (Continued)

Family of Joseph BASFORD (31) & Leah HARRIS

63. Mary BASFORD (Joseph4, Joseph3, James2, Jacob1). Born on 3 May 1774 in New Hampshire. [221] age 70 years 3 months 8 days at death per gravestone. Mary died in St. Armand, Canada East, on 11 Aug 1844. [321], [322] Buried on 13 Aug 1844 in All Saints Anglican Cemetery, Dunham, Quebec, Canada. [321]

The History of Canaan, NH states that "David Clark, son of Captain Caleb, married to Sarah Basford; Prescott Clark, his brother, married to Mary Masford. Two other Basford girls had married into the Scofield family: they were daughters of Joseph Basford, a revolutionary soldier, who had settled in Orange." [320, p. 499]

On the record of her death, William Gates, and J. Walter Farnam were witnesses. [321]

They had the following children:
196 i. Mary (1794-?)
197 ii. Charlotte (1796-1878)
198 iii. David (1798-1869)
199 iv. Betsey (1802-?)
200 v. Horatio Nelson (1804-1869)
201 vi. John Basford (1805-1888)
202 vii. Henry Harris (1809-1897)
203 viii. Leah (1810-1887)

She second married Bela FARNAM, ? . Born in 1766 in Massachusetts. [17] Bela died in Quebec, Canada, in 1819. [17]

[17]

She third married Zer. LEONARD, bef 19 Mar 1826. [325] Born ? . Zer. died bef 11 Aug 1844. [321] died before Mary.

[321], [325]

64. Elizabeth BASFORD (Joseph4, Joseph3, James2, Jacob1). Born on 21 May 1776 in New Hampshire. [221] Elizabeth died in Dunham, Canada East, on 9 Sep 1848. [204] Buried on 11 Sep 1848 in All Saints Anglican Cemetery, Dunham, Quebec, Canada. [17] aka: Betsey, Sarah?

The History of Canaan, NH states that "David Clark, son of Captain Caleb, married to Sarah Basford; Prescott Clark, his brother, married to Mary Basford. Two other Basford girls had married into the Scofield family: they were daughters of Joseph Basford, a revolutionary soldier, who had settled in Orange. ... William Gates, son of Reynold, a young man about eighteen years old, joined the colonists, and after the death of David Clark in 1810, married the widow." [320, p. 499] A number of other sources present similar information, possibly using the History of Canaan as a source. [216], [326]

However, [327] indicates that William Gates married Elizabeth (Basford) Clark rather than Sarah Basford. The witnesses to this marriage were "Henry Bassford brother of Elizabeth, and John Bunyan Scofield second cousin of William.". (John Bunyan Scofield would have been the husband to Elizabeth's first cousin.) This would suggest that David Clark married Elizabeth rather than Sarah as was suggested by The History of Caanan, NH (unless Sarah was a nickname for Elizabeth).

Her will was dated 4 Jul 1848, and was dictated from her bed in Dunham, Lower Canada. She gives her name as "Elizabeth Basford" but refers to her husband William Gates. It is not clear whether she regularly went by her maiden name? In addition to her husband, she also makes bequeaths to William Gates Clark, Adelaide Clark and Oliver Carpenter Clark who are minor children of Henry Harris Clark (previously of Dunham but now of the St. Hyacinth) and his late wife "Lidy" Scofield. Lydia was the daughter of Elizabeth's sister Olive, so these children would be her great nephews and niece. She left the main part of her estate to her "adopted son" Horatio Nelson Clark. This would be her nephew, the son of her sister Mary. [328]

I have two conflicting accounts of the gravestone inscription at All Saints Church, Dunham, Quebec, Canada.

[203] gives "Elizabeth Basford, wife of W. Gates, 22 Oct 1835, age 75 years"

[223] gives "b. 21 May 1776, d. 1848, age 72 yrs"

The second entry makes more sense relative to the other information we have. Presumably the first entry must correspond to a different Elizabeth Basford and W. Gates, although I have not been able to identify who that might be.

She second married William GATES, son of Reynold GATES (22 Oct 1762-26 Dec 1836) & Lydia CLARK (? -16 Nov 1795), on 26 Mar 1812 in Dunham, Canada East. [329], [327] Born on 1 Dec 1787 in United States. [331] William died in Dunham, Canada East, on 18 Jan 1859. [332] Death Cause: Drowned in Dunham Pond. [332] Occupation: Farmer. [327]

1831 census for Dunham, Canada East [333]
William Gates, farmer, age 64, b. US, Methodist
Elizabeth Gates, age 51, b. Canada, Methodist

He is probably the William Gates of Dunham who drowned 18 Jan 1859 in Dunham Pond. [332]

[203], [2], [320, p. 499], [329], [327], [330], [333], [332], [328]

They had the following children:
200 i. Horatio Nelson (Adopted) (1804-1869)
204 ii. Lydia Scofield (1812-1845)

Witnesses to the marriage were "Henry Bassford brother of Elizabeth, and John Bunyan Scofield second cousin of William." [327]

65. Jacob BASFORD (Joseph4, Joseph3, James2, Jacob1). Born on 6 Oct 1778 in New Hampshire. [221] Jacob died in Quebec, Canada, on 3 Feb 1852. [223] Buried in George Cemetery, Mansonville, Quebec, Canada. [334]

There are at least two Jacob Basfords living in the area that have been difficult to straighten out. The birthdate of the Jacob Basford, husband of Hannah, buried in the George Cemetery, Mansonville, Quebec, Canada is given as 1779. [334] I am assuming that he must be the Jacob Basford, son of Joseph and Leah (Harris) Basford who was born 6 Oct 1778? [17] And I am also assuming that he must be the Jacob Basford who married the widow Hannah (Flanders) Libby and had a son WIllard. (Willard's death record gives his parents names as Jacob Basford and Hannah Flanders. [226])

Since Jacob and Hannah are buried in the George Cemetery near the families of several Basford girls who married George brothers, [334] I am also assuming that the girls are the daughters of Jacob. However, the girls would have had to have been born before his marriage to Hannah Flanders since Hannah's first husband did not die until 1827. [335, p. 279] Therefore I am assuming that they must have been children from a first marriage for Jacob, although some undocumented sources have indicated that they were children of "Jacob and Hannah Basford." [334] It is possible that some or all of these girls should actually belong in another family.

There was also a Jacob Basford who married Nancy Poor 8 Sep 1818, Dunham, Canada East. Witnesses to his marriage to Nancy Poor were Henry Basford and William Gates, who would be the brother and brother-in-law to Jacob the son of Joseph and Lean (Harris) Basford. [336] This would suggest that it would be likely that this would fit in that family, however, not all of the data is consistent with this conclusion. A Jacob Basford filed land papers with his wife Nancy in 1821(?) in the Township of Stanstead. This must be the same Jacob who married Nancy Poor. A listing of the family members was given: Jacob Basford; Nancy Basford, my wife; James Basford, my son, 19 years old; Rhuhama(?) Basford — 18 years old; Charlotte Basford — 16 years old, Mary Basford — 15 years old; Ro__y Basford — 13 years old; Cynthia Basford — 11 years old. [337] Since he only married Nancy a few years before, the children must have been from a first wife.

One scenario is that Jacob the son of Joseph and Leah married once, had some children; was married a second time to Nancy Poor in 1817; then was married a third time to the widow Hannah Flanders, and had a son Willard. However, Jacob the husband of Hannah is believed to have three daughters Roxanna, Abigail and Sophronia. Jacob the husband of Nancy did have a daughter Roxey who could be the Roxanna, but Sophronia and Abigail are not listed in the record of his children found in the land petition. It might be possible that only Rozanna was his daughter, and that the other two "sisters" are actually cousins?

Another scenario is that there were two Jacobs: one married Nancy Poor as his second wife, and the other married Hannah Flanders as his second wife. The Census data confirms that there were indeed two Jacob Basfords in that area in 1831; one lived in Shefford, and the other lived in Brome Township. One of them must be the son of Joseph and Leah, but it is not clear who the other one would be. He could be Jacob the brother of Joseph, or possibly he could be a son of that Jacob?

For now, I will assume that the Jacob who married Hannah Flanders was the son of Joseph and Leah (Harris) Basford based on the close matching of the birthdate. I will also assume that the three Basford girls who married George brothers were his daughters by a first marriage. This would imply that the Jacob who married Nancy Poor must be a different person since he did not have daughters named Sophronia or Abigail. I will assume that this other Jacob must be a grandson of Joseph and Elizabeth (Goodhue) Basford, but it is not clear who his father would be. The best bet would be that he would be the son of Jacob (b. 5 Aug 1754) but we know very little about this family so far.

He might be the Jacob Basford whose name appears on the list of petitioners for the settlement of the township of Raxton, Canada East. [225]

He might be the Jacob Basford in the 1825 census for Stanstead, Canada East. [2]

He might be the Jacob Basford in the 1831 census for Brome Twp., Canada East. [2]

Or he might be the Jacob Basford in the 1831 census for Shefford, Canada East [220]
family of 8
1 male under 5
1 male age 5-14
1 single male 14-18
1 married male 30-60
2 femalies under 14
1 married female 14-45
1 single female 14-45

Could he be the father of Lydia Basford, "daughter of Jacob and Lydia Basford," who d. 28 Dec 1842 aged 12 years, 11 months, 19 days, and is buried at All Saints Church, Dunham, Quebec, Canada. [203] If so, his first wife must have been named Lydia, and must have died aft 1830.

[17], [2], [221], [334], [335, p. 279], [226], [223], [338, p. 219]

He first married (?) (BASFORD), ? . Born ? . (?) died ? .

Jacob and Hannah Basford are buried with several Basford girls who married George brothers in the George Cemetery, Mansonville, Quebec, Canada. It has been reported that the girls are the daughters of Jacob and Hannah. [334] However, Jacob and Hannah could not have married until after Hannah's first husband died in 1827. [335, p. 279] Therefore, I am making the assumption that the girls were daughters of Jacob by a first wife. Willard Basford's death record confirms that his parents were Jacob and Hannah (Flanders) Basford. [226]

They had the following children:
205 i. Roxanna (?-1840)
206 ii. Sophronia (1814-1881)
207 iii. Abigail (1817-1888)

He second married Hannah FLANDERS, daughter of Thomas FLANDERS (? -? ) & Eunice EASTMAN (? -? ), abt 1827-1833. death of Moses Libby and birth of Willard. Born on 10 Jan 1785 in Alton, NH. [338, p. 219] Hannah died in Quebec, Canada, in 1875. [334], [223] Buried in George Cemetery, Mansonville, Quebec, Canada. [334]

One source indicates that she died a few years after she married Jacob Basford. [335, p. 279] However, I am assuming that she must be Hannah the wife of Jacob Basford who died in 1875 and is buried in the George Cemetery, Mansonville, Quebec, Canada. [334] I am also assuming that they are the same Jacob and Hannah (Flanders) Basford who had a son WIllard born in 1833. Willard's death record gives his mother's name as Hannah Flanders which would seem to confirm this. [226]

She may be the Hannah Basford listed in the 1870 federal census for Derby, Orleans Co., VT, p. 108 [339]
Ashael? Place, male, age 54, b. Canada, at work in hotel
Alma, female, age 34, b. Canada, keeping house

[223] gives birth as 1791.

[17], [334], [335, p. 279], [226], [223], [338, p. 219]

They had one child:
208 i. Willard C. (1833-1918)

They had 3 daughters who married George borthers. [334]

66. Charlotte BASFORD (Joseph4, Joseph3, James2, Jacob1). Born on 21 Nov 1780 in New Hampshire. [221] Charlotte died in Sutton, Quebec, Canada, on 6 Jun 1867. [340], [341] in her 89th year. Buried in Abbott's Corner Cemetery #1, Frelighsburg , Quebec, Canada. [341]

In one set of notes [17] gives birth as 2 Nov 1775, and indicates that she was unmarried. In another place it is indicated that she was of Essex, VT, and might have been a daughter of Joseph's brother Benjamin. I wonder if perhaps there aren't two Charlotte that are being confused somehow?

Abbott's Corner Cem. # 1, Frelighsburg, Quebec [342]
Charlotte Basford, d. June 6, 1867 ae. 88yrs. 7ms. & ? dys. (stone broken)

[343] indicates that the the Charlotte Basford who married Reynold Gates was from Essex, VT.

[17], [131], [320, p. 605], [343], [322], [344], [340], [342], [341]

She married Reynold GATES, son of Josiah GATES (15 Jan 1722/3-22 Sep 1807) & Lydia MARVIN (? -10 Jun 1775), on 9 Apr 1800 in Canaan, NH. [131], [343] Born on 22 Oct 1762 in Colchester, CT. [345], [344] Reynold died in Canaan, NH, on 26 Dec 1836. [320, p. 605], [344] Buried in Canaan, NH. [17]

[17], [131], [320, pp. 522, 605], [343], [345], [344]

Married by Daniel Blasdel(?), Esq. [131]

67. John BASSFORD (Joseph BASFORD4, Joseph3, James2, Jacob1). Born on 31 Mar 1782 in New Hampshire. [221] John died in New York, on 14 Jan 1866. [17] aka: Basford.

He is probably the John Basford of St. Armand, who sold 200 acres of land in Dunham to James Dodge on 9 Feb 1803. He had obtained this land on 27 Jun 1801. [346]

There is John Basfod in the 1825 census for Dunham, Missisquoi Co., Canada East with a family of 11 [330]
3 children under 6
3 children 6-13
2 children 14-17
1 married male 40-59
2 females under 14
3 single females 14-44
1 married female 14-44

There is another John Basford in the 1825 census for St. Armand, Redford Co., Canada East. [17]

There is a John Basford, farmer, in the 1831 census for Dunham, Missisquoi Co., Canada East. with a family of 12 [220]
4 males 6-13
1 single male 14-17
1 married male 30-59
1 married male 60+
2 females under 14
1 married female 14-44
3 single females 14-44
1 marred female 45+
(The numbers don't add up to 12, so perhaps 2 were hired help?)

He is probably the John Basford who sold 20 acres of land in Dunham, Missisquoi Co., Lower Canada to George Doucaster on 23 Apr 1833. [347] He also sold 45 acres of land in Dunham, Missisquoi Co., Lower Canada to George Doucaster on 14 Jan 1840. [348] He had obtained this land from the "commissioner appointed for the sale and management of the waste lands of the Crown."

He is probably also the John Basford who sold 52 acres of land in Dunham, Missisquoi Co., Lower Canada to William Gates on 5 Mar 1840. He had obtained this land on 3 Jul 1831 from the widow and heirs of Prescott Clark. [349] (Prescott Clark was the husband of his sister Mary, and William Gates was the husband of his sister Elizabeth.) Perhaps he sold this land just before he removed to New York?

1 male 20-30 (Aaron?)
1 male 50-60 (John Sr.)

1 female 50-60 (Eliza)

He sold twelve acres of land in Westville, NY to his son, "John Basford, Jr." for $200 on 22 Mar 1848. [350] He purchased the same land back from John Jr. for $200 on 29 Apr 1850. [351]

He married Eliza BLAKE (81) , daughter of John BLAKE (abt 1759-16 Jan 1842) & Elizabeth BASFORD (34) (1 Oct 1760-5 Sep 1829), by abt 1810. Born on 26 Oct 1784 in Weare, NH. [251], [247, Blake Genealogy, p. 23] Eliza died in Belmont, NY, on 21 Aug 1861. [354] aka: Betty, Betsey.

Died at the home of her son-in-law Fletcher Dunham. [354]

Her obituary gives age as 78 years 10 months 13 days, which would correspond to a birth date of abt 8 Oct 1782. [354] This is a little inconsistent with the birthdate of 26 Oct 1784 given elsewhere, [17] and would also conflict with the birth of Eliza's brother Jesse.

One set of notes gives birth as 1790. [17]

They had the following children:
209 i. Charlotte (~1810-1878)
210 ii. Joseph (?) (1813-1894)
211 iii. John J. (1817-1874)

214 vi. Anna (~1822-1906)

68. Wealthyany BASFORD (Joseph4, Joseph3, James2, Jacob1). Born on 13 Jun 1784 in New Hampshire. [221] Wealthyany died in Frelighsburg , Quebec, Canada, on 24 Dec 1864. [341] age 82 years. Buried in Abbott's Corner Cemetery #1, Frelighsburg , Quebec, Canada. [341] aka: Wealthy.

The History of Canaan, NH states that "David Clark, son of Captain Caleb, married to Sarah Basford; Prescott Clark, his brother, married to Mary Basford. Two other Basford girls had married into the Scofield family: they were daughters of Joseph Basford, a revolutionary soldier, who had settled in Orange." [320, p. 499]

On 13 Dec 1823, she was named as "Tutrix" for her minor children from her first marriage to John Bunyan Scofield. [355]

On 6 Jan 1824, Wealthyany and her second husband Nathan Stevens made a deposition regarding the estate of her first husband John Bunyan Scofield. An inventory and description of all the proeprty from the estate was presented. The depostion included a list of the six living children from her first marriage: "Olive Scofield aged eighteen years last June, Emeline Scofield aged sixteen years last February, Lorenzo Scofield, aged fourteen years last April, Julia Scifield aged twelve years last March, Praxes Felicia Scofield age ten years last January and Marianne Scofield aged eight years last January." [356] On 15 Jan 1824, Welthyany and Nathan made a petition regarding the disposition of the estate. They indicated that they were unable to repay the debt to the Signiory of St. Armand associated with a grant of land (Lots numberone and two in St. Armand, comprising 76 acres) that was part of her late husband's estate. They indicated that Salmon Baker had proposed a solution to their financial difficulties whereby he would exchange the property in question for another piece of land (presumably of less value), and that he would then pay any outstanding debt. Wealthyany and Nathan requested that the court permit a "competent number of the relations and friends" of Wealthyany's children be assembled to give their opinion and advice regarding this proposal. On 13 Feb 1824, such a group was assembled including John Scofield, grandfatherl Jesse Scofield and James Scofield, uncles; and Homer Smith, Nathaniel Hibbard, Joseph Tyler & John Ayer, friends to the said minors, all residing in St. Armand. The friends and relatives indicated that "in contemplation of the ruinous consequences of a prosecution for the debt due to the ... Signiory of St. Armand the eventuality of a Public sale of the Land ... [and] considering from their knowledge of the respective value of the lands proposed to be exchanged that Salmon Baker offers very nearly if not quite the equivalent of the Lands and premises belonging to the said minors and their mother the proposed exchange is the most eligible means of releasing them from the debt ..." On 19 Mar 1824, the court authorized the petitioners to proceed with the proposed arrangements. [356] On 29 Jun 1824, Wealthyany and Nathan proceded to exchange the property in St. Armand, Lower Canada with Salmon Baker. [357]

She is probably the person who died 24 Dec 1864, age 82, and is buried in Abbott's Corner Cemetery #1, Quebec, Canada. The stone is broken and the name is missing. The lower half of the stone reads
.../John B. Scofield/Died/Dec. 24, 1864, aged 82 years
Presumably, the top half of the stone would have read something like "Wealthy the wife of" [358]

That at the day of the decease of the said late John Bunyan Scofield the Communautes between him & your petitioner the said Wealthyany was owing sundry debts the largest of which was that which was owing to the Signior of the Signiory of St. Armand aforesaid for the grant and concession of the lands which then belonged and still belongs to the said Communaute-
That during her widowhood she hath paid the most of the minor debts and but a small part of the largest one above mentioned which latter one, at this day including the lawful interest accrued thereon, amounts to one hundred pounds or thereabouts which debt hath long ere now become payable to the Signior of the aforesaid Signiory, who since it became due, might ere now for the payment thereof have caused perhaps the whole of the Property of the said Communaute to be sold-
That your Petitioner being unable and on this account the more anxious to pay and liquidate the said debt, have listened to a proposal lately made to them by one Salmon Baker of St. Armand aforesaid which is as follows to wit that in counter change for the piece and parcel of land belonging to the said Communaute in the aforementioned inventory designated, he the said salmon Baker would convey and a___ unto your petitioner the said Wealthyany and her minor children aforenamed seventy six acres & two roods of land or thereabouts part and parcel of Lot number one and number two in the aforesaid signiory of St. Armand bounded as follows to wit the part and parcel of Lot number two easterly by a line which separates the westernmost one hundred acres or thereabouts from the remainder of the said Lout northerly by part of the northerly boundary line of said Lot westerly by the easterly boundary of the westernmost twenty five acres in said Lot for the piece and parcel of Land belonging to the said Communaute in the afore mentioned inventory designated, he the said Salmon Baker would convey and a__ unto your petitioner the said Wealthyany and her minor children aforenamed seventy six acres & two roods of land or thereabouts parts and parcels of Lots number one and number two in the aforesaid signiory of St. Armand bounded as follows to wit the part and parcels of Lot number two easterly by a line which separates the westernmost one hundred acres or thereabouts from the remainder of the said Lot northerly by part of the northerly boundary line of said Lot westerly by the easterly boundary of the westernmost twenty five acres in said Lot and southerly by part of the line of division between the said Lots number two and one containing about seventy five acres in superficies, fifty acres thereof cleared & under cultivation a framed house is erected thereon in good repair and the part and parcel of Lot number one bounded as follows to wit beginning at the south easterly corner or angle of the last above described piece thence westerly as a certain stone fence runs about four rods to a stake standing therein, thence southerly passing twelve feet easterly of the easternmost of two framed barns standing within the said piece to extend eight rods to a stone stake thence westerly parallel within the division line between the said Lots number one and two, twenty rods to a stake thence northerly at right angles eight rods to the aforesaid stone fence thence following the said fence to the southwesterly corner or angle of the said last above described piece thence easterly upon the aforesaid divisional line to the corner beyond containing about one acre and two rods in superficies two framed barns erected thereon both in good repair-
Moreover that he the said Salmon Baker would pay and discharge whatever sum now is and might (at the day that good and sufficient title deeds of exchange of the said Lots and Farms might legally be expected) be owing to the signior of signiory aforesaid be the amount what it may and lastly would pay and defray all the expense which would necessarily have to be incurred for the purpose of procuring a legal exchange & permuttion of the said lands-
Which proposal your Petitioners deeming preferable to any other manner of discharging the said debt they therefore humbly pray-that your court would be pleased to permit that a competent number of the relations and friends of the aforesaid minor children assemble before Leon Lalanne Notary Public in St. Armand aforesaid to give their opinion and advice touching the expediency of the proposed exchange and in order if the same should be advised your honors may thereafter order and authorize what of right in the premises.
