Sixth Generation (Continued)

Family of Elizabeth BASFORD (64) & William GATES

204. Lydia Scofield GATES (Elizabeth BASFORD5, Joseph4, Joseph3, James2, Jacob1). Born on 1 Jul 1812. [204] Lydia Scofield died in Dunham, Quebec, Canada, on 2 Nov 1845. [17] Buried in All Saints Anglican Cemetery, Dunham, Quebec, Canada. [204] aka: Lidy. [328]

[204] indicates that the wife of Henry Harris Clark was Lydia Scofield Gates, the daughter of William and Elizabeth (Basford) Gates. However, the birth record Matthew Laing Clark (b. 9 Feb 1839, bp. 20 Jul 1840) shows him to be the son of Henry Harris & Lydia Clark, and indicates that Lydia was the daughter of James & Olive Scofield. [358] The will of Elizabeth (Basford) Gates leaves bequests to William Gates Clark, Adelaide Clark and Oliver Carpenter Clark, children of Henry Harris Clark and the late Lidy Scofield. However, it does not confirm whether Lydia was her daughter or not. [328] One possibility is that she was the biological daughter of the Scofields, but was adopted into the Gates family. (William and Elizabeth (Basford) Gates apparently adopted one of Lydia's cousins so perhaps they couldn't have children of their own?)

I will tentatively assume that Lydia was the daughter of William and Elizabeth (Basford) Gates, although this is not certain.

[320, p. 522], [204] Henry Harris died in Frelighsburg , Quebec, Canada, on 18 May 1897. [322], [341] Buried in Frelighsburg Methodist Church Cemetery, Frelighsburg , Quebec, Canada.
