Sixth Generation (Continued)

Family of Jonathan BASFORD (74) & Phoebe N. (BASFORD)

253. Phoebe BASFORD (Jonathan5, Benjamin4, Joseph3, James2, Jacob1). Born abt 5 Apr 1806 in Franklin Co., VT. [409] age 70 years 8 months 10 days at death. Phoebe died in Edgar Co., IL, on 15 Dec 1876 or 15 Dec 1878. [409]

It is highly probably that Phoebe is the daughter of Jonathan Basford, but this has not been proven. In the 1830 census Jonathan Basford is listed between Samuel Jones, and Samuel's father Jacob Jones which would seem to increase the likelihood that this is the case. [409]

There are two listings of Phoebe Basford Jones' cemetery record within the publications "Edgar Co., IL Cemeteries"; These listing are under the Mt Carmel/Light Cem, Brouilett Creek Twp, Edgar Co, IL. One lists her death as Dec. 15, 1878 and the other Dec 15, 1876. For her age at death, one shows aged 70y 8m 14d and the other 70y 8m 10d. [409]

[23], [409]

She married Samuel Yeatton JONES, son of Jacob JONES (15 Jan 1772-27 Sep 1851) & Mary Jane YEATON (11 Apr 1763-5 Jul 1835), abt 1822 in Kennebec Co., ME. [23], [409] Born on 12 Nov 1794 in Lebanon, ME. [409] Samuel Yeatton died in Edgar Co., IL, on 8 Nov 1874. [409] Buried in Light Cemetery, Brouilett Twp., Edgar Co., IL. [409]

1 male 30-40 (Samuel)

1 female 20-30 (Phoebe)

1850 federal census for Edgar Co., IL., p. 119 [409]
Samuel Jones, male, age 55, b. Kennebeck Co., ME, farmer, real estate $4000
Pheba B., female, age 43, b. Franklin Co., VT
Jacob B., male, age 27, b. Edgar Co., IL, laborer
Julia A., female, age 22, b. Vermillion Co., IN
John R, male, age 23, b. Edgar Co., IL, laborer
Elizabeth J., female, age 18, b. Edgar Co., IL
Samuel, male, age 14, b. Edgar Co., IL
Stephen D., male, age 9, b. Edgar Co., IL
David R., male, age 6, b. Edgar Co., IL
Zachary T., male, age 1, b. Edgar Co., IL
Stephen J., male, age 1; b. Edgar Co., IL

[409] gives birth as 12 Nov 1794 in one note, but indicates that he was age 63 years 1 months 2 days at death in another which would correspond to a birth date of 6 Dec 1810. I will assume that the 1794 date is correct given the birthdate of his son Jacob.

[17], [23], [409]

They had the following children:
590 i. Jacob Basford (~1823-?)
591 ii. Deliah Ann (1824-1847)
592 iii. John Kilburn (1827-1911)
593 iv. Jonathan R. (~1828-?1848)
594 v. Elizabeth J. (~1831-?)
595 vi. Samuel (~1836-1926)
596 vii. Sephus (?) (~1841-?)
597 viii. Zachary T. (Twin) (~1849-?)
598 ix. Stephen J. (Twin) (~1849-1889)

254. Joshua K. S. BASFORD (Jonathan5, Benjamin4, Joseph3, James2, Jacob1). Born abt 1808-1810 in Vermont. [681] age 42 in 1850 CA census, age 40 in 1850 IL census. Joshua K. S. died aft 1860. [200]

He was a witness on a deed from his parents Jonathan and Phoebe Basford to George Harding on 3 Mar 1829. [394]

I assume that the Joshua K. S. Basford who married Margaret Little in Sangamon Co., IL on 21 Mar 1830, [404] is probably the same one who married Agnes Newman on 8 Aug 1839 at Tippecanoe Co., IN. [406] I assume he is also a J. K. S. Bapford who married Eliza Naper on 1 Mar 1848 in McHenry Co., IL. [404] Could this also be the same man.

He bought two parcels of land in Edgar Co., IL from Jonathan and Phebe Basford (probably his parents) on 21 Jul 1832 for $83.33. At the time he was a resident of Sangamon Co., IL. [398]

He sold 26 acres of land in Edgar Co., IL to Jonathan Basford 7 Nov 1835 for $200. At the time Joshua was a resident of Edgar Co., IL. [400]

1840 census for Parke Co., IN, p. 175. [408]
J. K. S. Basford
1 male age 5-9 (Samuel)
1 male age 30-39 (Joshua)
2 females under 5 (Margarete & Catharine?)
1 female age 10-14 (Jane?)
1 female age 20-29 (Agnes)

Joshua K. S. Basford and Agnis his wife sold 26 acres of land in Edgar Co., IL to Jonathan S. Basford on 30 Aug 1842 for $100. At the time the residence of Joshua and Agnis was given as Edgar Co. [682] This would appear to confirm that he must be the Joshua K. S. Basford who married Agnes Newman on 8 Aug 1839 in Tippecanoe Co., IN, [406] and was listed in the 1840 census of Parke Co., IN. [683] He must have moved back to Illinois sometime between 1840 and 1842.

1850 federal census of Riley, McHenry Co., IL, 12 Sep 1850, p. 340 [405]
Joshua K. S. Basford, male, age 40, b. VT, farmer
Eliza, female, age 33, b. NY
Margarete, female, age 11, b. IL?
Dehlia, female, age 8, b. IL?
Marian, female, age 6, b. IL?
Harriet, female, age 3, b. IL?
Devillo, male, age 2, b. IL?
Phebe, female, age 6/12, b. IL?
Francis Mosier, male, age 15, b. OH
Mary Mosier, female, age 14, b. OH
John Mosier, male, age 8, b. IL?
Samuel Mosier, male, age 5, b. IL?
(The Mosier children are believed to be from a first marriage of Eliza.)

Joshua apparently went to California, presumably in search of gold, since he is also listed in the 1850 census for that state.

1850 census of Township 1 (Sonora), Tuotumne Co., CA, May 11, 1850, p. 163 [681]
J.K.S. Bassford, male, age 42, b. IL, miner

He is probably the J. K. Bassford listed in the 1860 census of San Francisco, 6th District, CA. [200] His wife was still living in Illinois, but was using the name Eliza Mosier, so presumably they were separated or divorced by that time.

Joshua K S. Basford
Agnis Basford
Š Recorded 10 Dec 1847

He first married Margaret LITTLE, on 21 Mar 1830 in Sangamon Co., IL. [404] Born ? . Margaret died ? .

[404]

They had the following children:
599 i. Jane (?) (~1831-?)
600 ii. Samuel (?) (~1833-?)
601 iii. Catharine (?) (~1838-?)

They are probably the parents of the Samuel Basford, b. abt 1836, Illinois, who was living in Fayette Co., IA at the time of the 1860 census. [685] (Joshua's brother Benjamin was living in that same County at the time.) A son of the right age is listed with them in the 1840 census.

He second married Agnes NEWMAN, on 8 Aug 1839 in Tippecanoe Co., IN. [406] Born abt 1812 in Germany. [686] age 38 in 1850 census. Agnes died ? . aka: Agnis. [682]

She is probably the Agnas Basford listed in the 1850 census for Indianapolis Centre, Marion County, IN. She was listed at age 38, and was born in Germany. She was living in a hotel owned by a Mathew and Ingram Little. [686]

[406], [682]

They had the following children:
602 i. Margaret M. (1842-?)
603 ii. Dehlia (~1842-?)
604 iii. Marian (~1844-?)
605 iv. Harriet (~1847-?)

He third married Eliza (MOSIER), on 1 Mar 1848 in McHenry Co., IL. [404], [684] Born abt 1817-1819 in Pennsylvania. [405], [687], [550], [688], [689] age 33 in 1850 census, age 41 in 1860 census, age 52 in 1870 census, age 62 in 1880 census, age 82 in 1900 census. Eliza died aft 1900. [688] aka: Mosier, Mosser, Marshall, Masser. [687], [550], [688], [689]

Presumably the Mosier children listed with Joshua and Eliza in the 1850 census would be Eliza's children from a prior marriage. [405] In the 1860 census, she is listed with the same children and gives her name as Eliza Mosier. [687] Probably she was divorced or separated from Joshua by that time and reverted to her first husband's surname.

1860 federal census for Riley, McHenry, IL, p. 427 [687]
Eliza Mosier, female, age 41, b. PA, real estate 2400, personal estate 200
Francis, male, age 25, b. VA, farmer
Mary, female, age 23, b. OH
John, male, age 17, b.IL, farmer
Samuel, male, age 15, b. IL
Devillo, male, age 11, b. IL
Amelia, female, age 10, b. IL

1870 federal census for Montana, Boone Co., IA, p. 60 [550]
Eliza Mosser, female, age 52, b. PA, personal estate 125
Phoebe Basswell, age 20, b. IL, milliner

She is probably the Eliza Marshall (age 62, b. PA) living with her daughter Phebe at the time of the 1880 census. [689]

She is probably the Eliza Masser living living with her daughter Phebe at the time of the 1900 census (mother-in-law, age 82, b. Apr 1818, PA). [688]

[405], [687], [404], [550], [688], [684]

They had the following children:
606 i. Devillo E. (~1848-1913)
607 ii. Phebe Amelia (~1850->1905)

Eliza's name on the marriage record is difficult to decipher. It appears to be "Maper", but it is possible that it is "Mosier." If it is Maper, then that would probably be her maiden name since she was apparently previously married to a Mosier given the Mosier children living in the Basford household in the next census.

255. Jonathon Sanborn BASFORD (Jonathan5, Benjamin4, Joseph3, James2, Jacob1). Born on 8 Jun 1811 in Franklin Co., VT. [405, place], [690, pp. 112-113] gravestone. Jonathon Sanborn died in Ravenwood, MO, on 18 May 1895. [690, pp. 112-113] gravestone. Buried in Sweet Home Cemetery, Jackson Twp., Nodaway Co., MO. [690, pp. 112-113] aka: Sanborn. [403]

He bought land in Illinois in 1830, 1834, 1835, 1838, 1839, 1844, and 1852. [392]

He was a witness on a deed from his parents to George Harding on 3 Mar 1829. [394]

Jonathan bought 11-1/2 acres of land in Edgar Co., IL from his parents on 13 Aug 1832 for $131.04. [399] Jonathan and Guly sold 4 acres of land in Edgar Co., IL to Robert Rutherford on 7 Apr 1837 for $30. [691] They sold 40 acres of land to Benjamin S. Basford (probably Jonathan's brother) on 13 Dec 1837 for $200. [692] They sold another 11.5 acres of land to him on 31 Dec 1837 for $150. [693] Jonathan bought a parcel of land in Edgar Co. from William Allen on 1 Jan 1838 for $50 [694] Perhaps he was a brother or other relative of his wife? Jonathan bought 14 acres of land in Edgar Co., IL from Benjamin S. and Abigail Basford on 21 Sep 1839 for $150. [695]

1840 federal census for Edgar Co., IL, p. 64. [402]

He bought 14 acres of land in Edgar Co., IL from Benjamin S. and Abigail Basford on 17 Feb 1841 for $150. [696] He sold this land to Alanson Baldwin on 9 Oct 1843 for $60. [697]

He received a patent for twenty acres of land in Edgar Co., IL on 11 Mar 1844. He paid $45 to the School Commission for this land. [698]

Jonathan bought 14 acres of land in Edgar Co., IL from Thomas B. and Deborah Littlefield on 18 Dec 1845 for $35. [699] Jonathan and Guly sold several parcels of land in Edgar Co., IL to Peter Ago(?) on 29 Jul 1847 for $1256. [700] Jonathan bought 160 acres of land in Edgar Co., IL from Alexander and Rosilla McCune and Samuel and Lucinda Lowry of Parke Co., IN on 30 Jul 1847 for $800. [701] (I wonder whether Rosilla and Lucinda might be his sisters?)

1850 federal census for 19th District, Edgar Co., IL, p. 165. [405]
Jonathan S. Basford, age 39, b. Franklin Co., VT, farmer, real estate 3000

Deliah P., age 9/12, b. Edgar Co., IL

Jonathan bought 40 acres of land in Edgar Co. from Charles W. and Catharine Allen on 20 Apr 1850 for $260. [702] Probably he was a brother or other relative of Johathan's wife Guly. He bought two parcels of land from Daniel M. and Dicea Ellen Cameron 5 Sep 1851 for $565. [703] Jonathan bought several parcels of land from Levi, Anna Maria and Jacob Littlefield 4 Mar 1852 for $440. [704] Jonathan and Guly sold forty acres of land in Edgar Co., IL to Jason Jones on 4 Mar 1853 for $200. [705] Jonathan bought 11 acres of land in Edgar Co., IL from Martha Allen (presumably his mother-in-law) on 4 Aug 1855 for $200. On that same day, he bought 26 acres of land in Edgar Co. from Archillis Pinkney Allen and his wife Elizabeth A. Allen for $200. [706] Possibly Archillis Pinkney Allen could be his brother-in-law?

On 27 Jul 1858, Jonathan S. and Guly M. Basford sold ten parcels of land in Edgar Co. to Dorastus L. and Eli Serpering of Indiana for $7272. [707]

Probably John and Rosetta are the children of Ransom, whose first wife had died.

The child Martha A. Bennett is also listed with her father Daniel Bennett in the 1870 census. [709]

1880 federal census for Jackson Twp., Nodaway Co., MO, 28 Jun 1880, p. 258 [710]

He married Guly M. ALLEN, daughter of John ALLEN (abt 1784-8 Mar 1834) & Martha CLARK (abt 1782-? ), on 4 Jan 1833 in Edgar Co., IL. [714], [404] Born on 8 Feb 1811 in Lee Co., VA. [690, pp. 112-113], [715] gravestone. Guly M. died in Sweet Home, Nodaway Co., MO, on 28 Dec 1903. [715] Buried in Sweet Home Cemetery, Jackson Twp., Nodaway Co., MO. [690, pp. 112-113] aka: Gulay, Julia, July.

The 1850 census for Edgar Co., IL gives her birthplace as simply "Lee." [405] Presumably this might refer to a Lee Co., since all of the other birthplaces in the family were given in terms of counties. There is a Lee Co., IL, so this might be a possibility? Ken Hillmann had indicated that "she was Scotch-Irish from Virginia," [381] so Lee Co., VA is another possibility? The 1870 census gives her birthplace as Virginia, so this would seem to support the Lee Co., VA possibility. [709]
