260. Dr. Horace Henry BASSFORD (David BASFORD5, Benjamin4, Joseph3, James2, Jacob1). Born abt 1805-1806 in Vermont. [405], [687] age 45 in 1850 census, age 54 in 1860 census, in 59th year at death. Horace Henry died in Lowell, IL, on 14 Nov 1863. [734] Buried in Lowell Cemtery, Lowell, IL. [17] Lot 27, Row 3 North. Occupation: Physician. [234, p. 839] aka: Basford, Barford.

He is a probable son of David and Aurelia Basford, but this has not been proven. The most compelling evidence is provided by the fact that Horace took out a mortgage from David in 1832. [417] He could also be a son of David's brother Jonathan.

He graduated as an M.D. form the University of Vermont with an honorary degree in 1829. [230]

Horace H. Basford of Waterbury, VT purchased an acre of land in Waterbury from Stephen Jones on 12 Dec 1831 for $35. [735] He was given a mortgage by Stephen Jones for the full amount of the purchase. [736] He apparently took out a second mortgage on this same land from David Basford of Milton (presumably his father) on 26 Mar 1832. Horace was to pay David a promissory note for $150 by the first of September. [417] (This property was located on Ricker Mountain which is now a state forest and park. [737])

His is one of the petitioners calling for a special town meeting in Vermillion on 24 Jan 1862 "for the purposes of taking into consideration the propriety of stopping the collection of the Bridge tax." [740]

He died intestate on 15 Nov 1863 in Lowell, IL. His wife Elizabeth filed a petition to be granted administration of his estate on 5 Dec 1863 at LaSalle Co. Court. In addition to Elizabeth, the petition names the heirs as Frances E. Little, wife of John Little, Sarah E. Dickinson, wife of Charles Dickinson, Susan M. Burlingham, wife of Preston Burlingham, Mary L. Bassford, and Merritt C. Bassford, his only children. Elizabeth was granted Letters of Administration on 5 Dec 1863. John Rider, Ezra M. Hawley and Stillmant S. Hall were sworn in as appraisers on 21 Dec 1865. An inventory of his estate was presented on 1 Jan 1864, and was valued at $1287.40. [734]

[420, p. 469] gives death as 14 Nov 1865, in Lowell (no state given), in his 59th year. It indicates that he was "formerly of Georgia, VT."

He married Elizabeth A. KIMBALL, bef 1831. birth of Frances. Born abt 1806-1807 in Vermont. [405], [687], [745] age 43 in 1850 census, age 53 in 1860 census, age 84 at death. Elizabeth A. died in Chicago, IL, on 13 Oct 1890. [746], [745], [747] age 84. Buried on 15 Oct 1890 in Graceland Cemetery, Chicago, IL. [745] Death Cause: Pneumonia. [746], [747]

She was appointed administratrix for her husband's estate on 5 Dec 1863. [734]

1870 federal census for Philo Twp., Champaign Co., IL, p. 215 [569]
Elizabeth Basford, female, age 64, b. VT, farming, real estate 12400, personal estate 580
Merrill, male, age 19, b. IL, working farm

She was living at the home of her daughter Susan Burlingham at the time of the 1880 census, [748] and also at her death (where her address was given as 193 30th St., Chicago, IL). [747]

Her obituary mentions daughters Mrs. E. P. Burlingham, and Mrs. M. L. Fisher. [746] The first one would be her daughter Susan who married Preston E. Burlingham, but it isn't clear which daughter married a Fisher.

[17], [748], [405], [687], [734], [746], [745], [747], [569], [743], [744], [247, Basford Genealogy, p. 3], [723]

They had the following children:
629 i. Frances E. (~1831-?)
630 ii. Sarah C. (~1841->1921)
631 iii. Susan Miranda (1844-1925)
632 iv. Mary S. (~1849-?)
633 v. Merritt Caldwell (1850-1921)

One of their daughters married an M. L. Fisher. [746]

261. Samuel BASFORD (David5, Benjamin4, Joseph3, James2, Jacob1). Born on 8 Jul 1808 in Georgia, VT. [749] or Fairfax, VT? Samuel died in Shelburne, VT, on 2 May 1877. [750] Buried in Village Burying Ground, Shelburne, VT. Death Cause: Consumption. [226] Occupation: Ship-Builder, Carpenter, Wheelwright. [230], [226]

He is probably a grandson of Benjamin Basford of Georgia, VT, but it has not been proven which of Benjamin's sons would be Samuel's father. Benjamin Jr. can be ruled out since he would have been about 12 years old at the time of Samuel's birth, but David or Jonathan would be possibilities. The 1820 census data would suggest that David had a son in the correct age range, and it appears that Jonathan had removed to Indiana by 1820, so David would appear to be the most likely candidate.

A family Bible record gives his birthplace as Fairfax, VT, [749] but his death certificate gives his birthplace as Georgia, VT. [750] The Georgia, VT location seems more logical if he is indeed the son of David Basford.

1830 federal census for Georgia, Franklin Co., VT, p. 13 [244]
Samuel Basford
1 male under 5 (George)
2 males 15-19 (perhaps brothers of Samuel or Henrietta)
1 male 20-29 (Samuel)
1 female 20-29 (Henrietta)
1 female 70-79 (perhaps Hnrietta's mother?)

Could he be the Samuel Basford of Hatley, age 34, who was baptized 5 Apr 1843 at the Methodist Church serving Bolton, Quebec, Canada? [751] If so, it appears that he may have spent some time living in Canada between the time when he lived in Georgia, VT and Shelburne, VT. The birthplace of his son Joseph indicates that he may have also lived in Westport, NY for a time.

Henrietta, female, age 60, b. Canada [sic], keeping house
Horace R., male, age 18, b. Canada [sic], house carpenter
Frank Warren , male, age 44?, b. Canada [sic], at home

Samuel was a very successful ship builder, and contractor. He helped John Ericcson "build his famous caloric boat." [752] (John Ericcson designed and built the Civil War boat Monitor.) Apparently, Samuel built a boat for the government and wasn't properly paid, as he is supposed to have filed a calim to recover payment. [230]

On 2 May 1873 he purchased a gravelot in the Village Burying Ground in Shelburne, VT for the sum of $2. At that time, his residence is given as Shelburne. [753]

His death record gives his death as 2 May 1877, Shelburn, VT. [750] (The death record was found in the Montpelier records, but the Shelburne Town Clerk indicated that his death was not recorded in their records.) His and is given as 69, b. Georgia, VT, and his occupation is given as wheelwright. The record appears to indicate that he was widowed, but this must be an error since his wife did not die until abt 1889. [230]

Attest—W'm H. Harmon, Town Clerk

He married Henrietta KINGSBURY, daughter of Joseph KINGSBURY (? -14 Feb 1863) & Mary MERRILL (abt 1774-7 Sep 1822), abt 1828 in Vermont. [230] Born on 7 May 1810 in Vermont. [252] Henrietta died in Crandon, SD, on 29 Jun 1889. [230], [757] Buried in Crandon Cemetery, Spink Co., SD. [757]

She was living with her son Fred at the time of the 1880 census of Georgia, VT. [758]

She apparently moved to South Dakota to live with one of her children after the death of her husband. Henrietta is found in the 1888 Methodist church records of Altoona, Beadle Co., SD. J. K. Basford is also listed in the church records suggesting that she may have been living with her son Joseph. [230]

She received Federal Land Grant in Spinks Co., SD on 7 Apr 1887. [759]

[757] gives birth as 7 May 1819.

They had the following children:

636 iii. Henry (1833-1916)
637 iv. Barnwell D. (~1835-1862)
638 v. Huldah E. (1840-~1924)
639 vi. Frederick K. A. (1843-1917)
640 vii. Joseph Kingsbury (1845-1921)
641 viii. Orville Samuel (1848-1926)
642 ix. Horace R. (Died Unmarried) (1851-1915)

262. Barnwell David (?) BASSFORD (David BASFORD5, Benjamin4, Joseph3, James2, Jacob1). Born abt 1810 in Vermont. [452] age 50 in 1860 census. Barnwell David (?) died in Travis Co., TX, aft 1886. [760] filed deposition. Buried in West Travis County Cemetery, Travis Co., TX. [422] Occupation: Lawyer, District Clerk, Stonemason. aka: B. D., Basford.

He is a probable son of David and Aurelia (Richmond) Basford, but this has not been proven.

He was admitted to the Franklin Co., VT Bar in Sep 1831. [420, p. 94]

He removed to Texas in 1838 and settled at the place that is now the city of Austin, which was then at the extreme frontier of Texas. A town called Waterloo had been laid off there, and Barnwell joined seven men who had camped there with the intention of improving lots and forming a permanent settlement here. He helped put up the first cabin that was ever built at this place. At that time there was a large encampment of Indians and Mexicans on the San Saba who were constantly stealing horses and murdering men, women and children. in the Spring of 1839 Judge Waller was sent there as the agent of the Republic to build the Capitol and other public buildings. It was then necessary that the place should have military protection. Capt. Michael Andrews was prevailed on to raise a "spy company" to act in the neighborhood of Austin. Barnwell and most of the other citizens of Waterloo joined this company. The company aforesaid while in service had several encounters with small bands of Mexicans in one of which the Mexican leader was killed. [760]

He received a grant of 320 acres in Bastrop Co., TX on 6 May 1839. [761]

He was the District Clerk in Travis Co., TX for several years. [762] He was the original purchaser and patentee of lot #3, blk #43 in Austin, TX. He and Robert Love were the original purchasers and patentees of lot #12, blk #43. [422]

One story indicates that he was a "rounder," and that he owned property all up and down the Colorado River around Austin. He is supposed to have lost it all on "wine, women and song." He had a brother who moved to Bastrop Co., TX. [422] (Presumably the brother is Harmon W. Basford.)

He was in Travis Co., TX in 1840. [763, p. 4]

Could he be the "M. Basford" listed in the 1850 census for Austin, Travis Co., TX?
1850 federal census of Austin, Travis Co., TX, 7 Aug 1860 [451]
M. Bassford, male, age 40, occupation "Non", b. "unknown"

1860 federal census of Austin, Travis Co., TX, 7 Aug 1860 [452]
B. D. Bassford, male, age 50, Stone Mason, b. Virginia
(I believe the birthplace is an error-KES)

In 1885, Barnwell petitioned the Legislature of Texas asking that he be paid for his service in the militia in 1839. He indicated that he had not been paid for this service, and that he had lost his horse during a raid by some Indians. He indicated that he would not ask for this assistance "so near the close of life if he had still strong arms to depend upon, but now in the seventy fourth year of his age he find that strength and agility have surrendered their dominions to feeble age that he has a young family leaning on him for support." Harmon W. Basford of Georgia, VT sold 10 acres of land in Georgia, VT to Elijah R. Green of Morristown, VT for $100 on 5 Apr 1839. [767] This land was bordered by the home lot of David Basford which adds to the circumstantial evidence that Harmon was the son of David.

He sold 18 acres of land in Georgia, VT to John Hannon of Georgia, VT for $150 on 12 Nov 1839. [768]

Burns being sole brothers and heirs of Eliza A. Basford deed of the first part and Benjamin H. Basford of the same place of the second part witnesseth that the said parties of the first part in consideration of the sum of one dollar ... convey to the party of the second part ... all their interest in that tract or parcel of land situate in the said town of Fort Covington and being the undivided three equal twelfth parts of a piece or lot of land heretofore owned (prior to 1860) by Luther Danforth, deceased, in his lifetime and usually known as the sugar bush lot. ... A partition suit was had between the owners of said premises and a decree of partition entered therein on the 27th day of November 1860 in an action in the Supreme Court wherein Warren(?) L. Deeds: Deed from Benjamin H. Basford to William H. Hooker

Fort Covington, NY, 31 Jul 1880

This Inductive(?) made this thirty-first day of July in the year of our Lord one thousand eight hundred and eighty between Benjamin H. Basford late of Fort Covington, Franklin County, New York and now of Constable in said County of the first part and William H. Hooker of Constable aforesaid of the second part ... in consideration for the sum of one thousand dollars convey to the said party of the second part ... all that piece or parcel of land being in Fort Covington ... being the same premises conveyed by Dr. Bates to one Beachean(?) Feb'y 16, 1855. Also all those nine equal undivided twelfth parts of the following described parcels in Fort Covington ... Also all the following described premises in Fort Covington ... being same part or portion of said sugar bush lot set off by the commissioner in partition in an action in Supreme Court as appears by the decree entered therein Nov 27, 1860 to Mrs. Eliza Ann Basford for her three equal undivided twelfth parts of said sugar bust lots and all her interest therein. Said Eliza Ann Basford having died without children and her heirs George A. Burns, J. Russell Burns, and Hiram H. Burns having conveyed said two last named pieces of land to said Benjamin H. Basford her husband the grantor herein named...

He first married Eliza Ann BURNS, daughter of John L. BURNS (? -? ), ? . Born in 1825 in New York. [17] cemetery record. Eliza Ann died in Fort Covington, NY, on 25 Jul 1880. [787], [788] Buried in Ft. Covington Cemetery, Ft. Covington, NY. [786] Death Cause: Congestion of the Lungs. [788]

Her age is given as 23 in the 1850 census, and 33 in 1860 census. This is slightly inconsistent with the cemetery record which gives her birth year as 1825. [17]

Deed of land from her brothers (Hiram, Joseph, and George) to her husband Benjamin H. Basford shortly after her death indicated that she "died without children on or about the 25th day of July 1880." [787] However, the 1860 census shows a son Charles age 10. Was he Benjamin's son from a previous marriage? Or perhaps Charles died before she did?

[17], [787], [788], [441], [366], [247, Basford Genealogy, p. 3]

They had one child:
654 i. Charles G. (~1850-?)

He second married Eliza Jane COBB, daughter of George COBB (? -? ) & Lura PEARL (? -? ), on 27 Nov 1881 in Georgia, VT. [425, p. 17], [785] Born abt Aug 1846 in Milton, VT or Westford, VT. [423] age 54 years 6 months at her death. Eliza Jane died in Georgia, VT, on 11 Feb 1901. [423] Buried in East Georgia, VT. They were divorced on 23 Apr 1890 in Franklin Co., VT. [785]

Her marriage record to Benjamin H. Basford gives her parents names as William Symmes and Julia (Davis). However, the surnames would seem to be inconsitent since it indicates it was her first marriage. The marriage record for her second marriage to Charles Reynolds, as well as her death record, give her parents' names as George and Lura (Pearl). [423]

[423], [17], [230], [785], [247, Basford Genealogy, p. 3]

Their divorce papers give the place of their marriage as Westford, Chittenden Co., VT. Eliza filed for a divorce on 27 Aug 1889. She indicated that they had been separated since 1 Oct 1883, when she was deserted by her husband. She stated that for a year prior to that date, he had treated her with "intolerable severity by threatening, striking & otherwise ill-treating her," and that on one occaision he struck her "many violent blows with axes, clubs & shoes(?) & caused her great bodily harm & then & there threatened to take her life." The divorce was granted 23 Apr 1890. [785]

For some period of time he lived in Clear Lake, IA, [791, pp. 1169-1171] before he removed to South Dakota, possibly as early as 1883, apparently to be near some of his Basford cousins. [230]

In the 1900 census, she is living with her daughter Emma in Clear Lake, IA as P. W. Basford, mother-in-law. [499] It is indicated that she only had one child, but this must be an error.

She was living in Clear Lake, IA in 1909. [230]

She was living with her brother Harmon in the 1910 census for Vacaville Twp., CA. [795]
