He began to a seafaring trade in 1855. He made at least one trip around the world. He was given command ot the boat Bark Helen Sands soon after he helped save her from shipwrecking during a storm in the Medeteranian Sea while serving as first mate. He sailed as a captain 13 years, and retired in 1886. [2]
“Captain Will O. Basford, born in 1838, in Augusta, is a son of William P. and Emeline (Colburn) Basford, and grandson of Jacob Basford, who came from New Hampshire to Augusta. Mr. Basford has lived in Pittston since 1839. In 1855 he began a seafaring life in the foreign trade. He was master of vessels from 1873 until 1886, since which time he has remained at home.” [950]
