Obituary: HERBERT BASFORD

Herbert Basford passed away July 8th, 1943, at the home of his daughter, Mrs. Esther Dodge, in
Albany, Vt., after a long period of failing health. He was seriously ill only a few days. Herbert Basford was born in Canada on April 2, 1868, to Willard and Cynthia A. Basford, and was
one of thirteen children. When Herb (as so many knew him) was only fourteen years of age he came
to the United States and worked for some time at a mill In Derby.

On August 2,1892 he was united in marriage to Miss Bessie Bowman of Newport Center. To this union five children were born, Mrs. Lela Gray of Glover, Mrs. Esther Dodge of Albany, Mrs. Gladys Brooks of Glover, and Leland Basford of Plainville, Conn. A son, Teddy Malvin, died in infancy. Nearly all of their married life was spent on a farm in the town of Barton. Mr. Basford's interest was his farm and family. He was a good neighbor, always ready to lend a helping hand. After the death of Mrs. Basford Jan. 5, 1933, Mr. Basford stayed on the farm only a short time. He then went to live with his children. The past winter he was with his son, Leland, and his wife in Connecticut, only coming to Vermont two weeks before his death.

Surviving relatives are his children already mentioned; three sisters, Mrs. Clara Sawyer of
Glover, Mrs. Myrtle Wilson of South Albany. and Mrs. R. C. Mills of Lowell, Mass; four
grandchildren, Mrs. Lloyd Bacon of Virginia, Hoyt Gray who is with the armed forces overseas, Pfc.
Ross W. Brooks of Miami, Beach, Florida, and Paul W. Brooks, Jr., of Glover.

Funeral services were held July 10th from the Glover Community Church with Rev. R. W. Hurlburt
of Barton officiating. The floral tributes were many and beautiful. Burial was in Westlook
cemetery in the family lot.

Among those from out of town who attended the funeral were: Mrs. Greta Leavitt of Stannard;
Myrtle Wilson and Clarence Wilson of South Albany; Mr. and Mrs. Baxter Bowman, Mr. and Mrs. Floyd Tinker and family, Mr. and Mrs. Royal Bowman and Alden Bowman, all from Newport Center; Mrs. R. C. Mills, Lowell, Mass.; Mrs. Fred Sawyer, Barton; Edson Basford, Wi]loughby; Mr. and Mrs. Noah Dodge, Albany; Mr. and Mrs. Leland Basford, Plainville, Conn., and Mrs. Hoyt Gray of Portland, Me.
