Seventh Generation (Continued)
Family of Benjamin S. BASFORD (258) & Abigail JOHNSON
623. Ruel David BASFORD (Benjamin S.6, Jonathan5, Benjamin4, Joseph3, James2, Jacob1). Born abt 1843 in Illinois. [783], [624] age 17 in 1860 census, age 27 in 1870 census. Ruel David died ? . Occupation: Plasterer. [624] aka: David R. [826]
He is probably the Ruel D. Basford who served in Company C of the 66th Illinois Infantry. His residence at the time of his muster on 18 Sep 1862 was given as Paris, IL. It is noted that he “deserted to the enemy 21 Nov 1862.” [1265]
He is listed with his parents in the 1870 federal census for DesMoines 2nd Ward, Polk Co., Iowa, taken on 25 Jul 1870. His age is given as 27, and his birthplace is Illinois. His occupation is listed as Plasterer. [624] But he also appears to be listed under his own record:

[783], [624], [1265], [1266], [826]

624. Frank R. (?) BASFORD (Benjamin S.6, Jonathan5, Benjamin4, Joseph3, James2, Jacob1). Born abt 1847 in Indiana. [823] age 33 in 1880 census. Frank R. (?) died ? .
It is not proven that he is a son of Benjamin, although the circumstantial evidence is consistent with this hypothesis. At the time of the 1880 census, he is living in the same town as Benjamin, his occupation is the same as his Benjamin and his son Melvin, and his birthdate and place is consistent with Benjamin’s migration. [823] But the question is where was Frank at the time of the 1850, 1856 abd 1860 censuses?

He was living with his parents at the time of the 1885 state census for Parsons, Labette Co., KS. [825] There was a young boy Willie R., age 3, also living in the home. He is probably a son from a first marriage for Melvin.
