Obituary: DEATH CALLS MRS. L.P. BASFORD
Well Known Momence Woman Dies On Monday
FUNERAL HELD WEDNESDAY
Was Prominent In Many Phases of City's Activities and Greatly Beloved by Everyone
In the passing away of Mrs. L.P. Basford Momence mourns the loss of one of its most beloved women. Mrs. Basford died at her home in this city about 2:30 Monday afternoon, after an illness of about two weeks with typhoid fever. While it was known for several days that her condition was critical, all were hoping, almost against hope, that she would be spared to her husband and to the community in which she was beloved, and in whose activities she had taken such an active part and in which she was so sorely needed.
About two weeks ago she was taken sick, but her condition was not considered serious. She had just returned from an extensive auto trip though the east with her brother. She was given the best of medical attention and her condition was so improved that she accompanied her husband to Champaign to witness the Illinois-Michigan foot ball game. On arriving at Champaign she was taken worse and on arrival home took to her bed from which she never arose. In spite of the tender nursing and medical care, she gradually grew worse. Complications set in and it was feared that she would not be able to successfully combat the disease. Her mother arrived from Chicago and assisted the nurses in caring for the patient. For hours she lay hovering between life and death. She made a heroic fight against the disease, but to no avail. The news of her death has caused a shadow of sadness to settle over the entire community.
Effie Miller was the only daughter of Mr. And Mrs. Frank H. Miller, of Chicago. She was born on the north side (of) Chicago, where she grew to young womanhood. She attended the schools of that section and graduated from the Lakeview High school. Her happy, genial disposition made her a general favorite with her school mates and the young people of her neighborhood.
On August 21, 1919, she was united in marriage to Dr. L.P. Basford and came to Momence as a bride. Dr. Basford had been established as a dentist in this city for about a year before his marriage. The same noble traits of character which mad her a general favorite in Chicago, soon brought her friends here by the score. She became active in social and club circles here. She was a member of the Methodist church of Rogers Park, Madison Chapter O.E.S. of Rogers Park. She soon became affiliated with the Woman's Club and the Home Bureau of this city, and was also a member of the King's Daughters. In all of these organizations she was every ready to do her part and her exceptional capabilities made her a valuable member and worker. She was also a member of the White Shrine. In all of these organizations she will be sadly missed, but no where will she be so sadly missed as in her home. Her home life was ideal, and the stricken husband has the profound sympathy of all. She was a loving daughter, sister, wife and friend. While her death is a severe blow to the city, her loved ones can be comforted by the knowledge that she did her duty fully to the community. Momence is a better city because Mrs. Basford spent a few years here. Her death was an especial blow to her brother, Edward, to whom se was not only a sister, but a "pal."
Short services were held from her late home on Wednesday morning, conducted by Rev. Truitt of the Methodist church, after which the remains were taken to Chicago by automobile, followed by a large number of sorrowing relatives and friends. The final services were held in the chapel at Rosehill Cemetery, Chicago, conducted by Rev. John Thompson, of the First Methodist church of Chicago. These services were largely attended by relatives and friends from Chicago and other points. Rev. Thompson was the clergyman who officiated at her marriage some five years ago. The floral offerings were many and beautiful and showed in part with what love and esteem she was held by all who knew her.
NOTE: Brother's name is Edmond, not Edward. Full name is Edmond Simpson Miller(e).
They had no children.
He second married Etta KLASSEN, on 26 Dec 1928 in Buffalo, NY. [572], [1192] Methodist Church. Born on 15 Sep 1895 in Momence, IL. [936], [572], [894] Etta died in Mission Viejo, CA, on 10 Jul 1977. [572], [894]
