His obituary indicates that he was the son of Albert and Mildred Matthew Basford. [349] In the 1930 census, Mildred Matthew is a housekeeper living in the home of Albert Basford, and both of them are listed as being single. [186]

His obituary indicates that he was survived by a son H. Eugene Basford. Since he had only been married to Nancy L. (Brawner) Rutherford in 1990, this must be a son from a previous marriage. He was also survived by several step children: Diana Malone of Lincoln, David Bell of Pawnee, Thomas Glenn of Kingsport, TN and Robert Rutherford of Kingsport, TN. [349] Robert Rutherford would presumably be the son of Nancy by her previous marriage to Don Rutherford. It isn’t clear whether the other step-children would be from earlier marriages of James or Mildred.
